Anthony Auerbach: Empire State Pavilion
Empire State Pavilion, installation view, Queens Museum of Art, 2008

The installation Empire State Pavilion comprises three works derived from the material of the survey.

The State of New York (2006) is image of the interior of the NYS Pavilion showing the survey in process. It is installed as a fake projection, that is, the light comes from a projector, but the image is stuck to the wall. Entering the space you cast your shadow on the image. Emperor Panorama (2007) consists of six light-tables and stereo-pairs. On each stands a magnifying stereoscope of the type normaly used for examining aerial photos. The paired images produce a minutely detailed, three-dimensional views of tiny parts of the survey. An untitled video projection locates the antique city-states and former colonial capitals which can be found upstate: Macedon, Troy, Athens, Rome, London, Paris and Berlin ...
