Index is an inventory of the photographs resulting from the aerial survey The State of New York. It consists of a 6" x 4" card file contained in a drawer cabinet and a unique 24.75" x 34.5" archival print for each photograph in the survey sequence.

The card file thus references a photographic atlas of The State of New York in 2,427 large sheets — complete with missing parts of the map. What the card index assembles, the atlas disperses, because only a single copy of each sheet will be printed for distribution.
