A prospectus is a printed advertisement for a property, for an investment or for a publication. Prospectus contains a “prospect” — something to look forward to — and also: a view on a landscape, or a plot of as yet unproven ground which might contain valuable ore or something else worth excavating. A prospectus is, eminently, an invitation to inspection and to speculation.
