KEEP OUT, staying-in performance/installation, Los Angeles, 2004

KEEP OUT was an action for the opening of It’s time to stay home and get some audience, final projects exhibition of artists in residence of the MAK centre for Art and Architecture Los Angeles at the Mackey Apartment house, Los Angeles, 2004. A sign reading ‘Marlene’s room KEEP OUT!’ was attached to the closed door of my room. I was inside watching TV. Anybody who ignorantly entered the rooom was ignored. I stared at the TV, changed the TV cannel, did a bit of zapping, or simply turned up the volume, as soon as someone tried to talk to me. If that did not have the effect to make intruders leave, I helped out with comments like ‘Leave me alone. I am watching TV’, ‘Can’t you read?’, ‘Just shut up and go!’, or I even got up and slammed the door. It was appalling.
